After some major issues in November, I thought I had been freed from major dilemmas just to have my trusted Niji die on me (all but complete destruction) one fine evening when I was going to sit down and read some news online. I actually smelled smoke. = =+++
Now, only the day before I had considered a backup, but Niji had been behaving so well that I figured one more day wouldn’t hurt. Here’s
lesson #1 in this post: DO NOT wait to do what you want to do today. You just DON’T know what will happen tomorrow. Fortunately, it was the motherboard that died so I (or Jack) managed to salvage all my electronic files (what I really care about).
So after some mental struggle (ok not that much) and some budget calculations (as well as harassment from my personal tech support Jack), I decided to purchase a Mac. In May 2008, I had purchased a netbook (
L.G. Spock), which actually helped save my life because I had to transfer everything over to Spockie before my new computer came. The new guy is named Rorschach (<3). I guess he's Aka Pet Fifth Generation. xD
After this ordeal, I decided that less I have to backup the better. And as the devout Google fan that I am, I decided to move ALL of my emails up to the cloud.
I think Gmail is amazing because you can just synch to the account on your computer and then just drag everything into the online Gmail accounts. Some people may say that they don’t want anyone to know their secrets… but frankly, I don’t have that many personal secrets and I’m certainly not scheming the demise of the world… so I had no qualms about putting all of my info into the hands of my beloved Google.
Lesson #2: Material possessions are not that important and may leave you one of these days (or vice versa)… so less the better.
I’m still in the experimental stage… but so far it’s been good not having to worry about the same thing happening to Ror… as for what remains of Niji… I bought an enclosure and turned it into Niji Jr… which serves as my Time Machine backup external HD.
Final lesson for this post: Finding happiness is to see every annoying/harsh/icky situation in a positive light.
