Problems With Self Reading II
Tarot is supposed to give you a logical conclusion drawn based on your current circumstances, but for me, that apparently is really difficult. That's why I've always had a "love-hate" relationship with my cards - I just change too much.I have not always been a conscious fan or promoter of change. In fact, sometimes, like many people, I fear it. That's why I have always been very careful with setting up my path in life. However, that is just not meant to be my fate. I am always looking for something new to try out, improving my personal skills and learning more, and also change my environment when there is a need. That's why, when I try to tell my fortune based on current circumstances, I always end up with answer that are very logical, yet change in a few moments/days because I put myself on a different path already.That is good and bad. Bad is that I could never figure out my fortune. Good is that I don't need tarot to give me a kick in the butt to get myself moving. Tarot works for me in other ways, for self-development and helping other people, as a therapeutic tool mainly. It has worked wonders. This is also why I love tarot, because I do not have to be driven by it (as I had feared in the past), but I can still be inspired by it.[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Change is the only Constant."][/caption]

[Reading] Trouble in Love
General Background:
A friend of mine wanted me to just do a general reading for her about the relationship she is currently in. I didn’t have any background aside from that she’s having some sort of trouble in the relationship. Her first question was: should I stay with him or leave him? That yielded a face card, so I asked her to try again with a different question. Then she asked the question: what should I do?Usually with something that general the cards do not produce very helpful readings. But this spread was one of the most coherent spreads I ever saw. Due to privacy reasons, I shall not reveal any of the background but will only tell the story of the spread.This is the classic Celtic Cross spread. I asked her to draw an additional card to see find out about the biggest factor influencing this spread (her life). That came out to be the Emperor. Much of this is according to my own interpretation of the cards, so there may be differences with traditional readings of the cards. However, when intuition takes over and lures out the other side of the card, it’s the most interesting to see how they can evolve to fit a situation.[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Trouble in Love"][/caption]

Situation: 2W - at a standstill, generally stable. For a relationship, then that means the relationship has reached a certain degree of maturity.
Obstacle: QnC (R) – QnC is the most passionate and loving person, but if (R) then she must be feared. She will use every tool in her scheming head to twist your heart and destroy your life.
Best that can be achieved: 4P (R) – no way to maintain stability, and therefore must break out of the mold and seeming stability.
Past: Death (R) - Fear of change, refusal to change
Present: Strength (R) – lack of internal strength to move on
Future: QnS (R) – the QnS is always a intelligent and fair person, but already has the tendency of being rather demanding on herself, when reversed, she is downright harmful to herself and possibly people around her.
True Self: 6C – unable to let go of the past, nostalgia, holding on to past kindness from other people (in this case, the man ).
Environment: High Priestess – a guiding factor, someone (probably female) who holds the key to the heart. In this case I wondered if that represented myself… but that is unclear.
Hopes/fears: Wheel – hoping for a twist of fate to help one out of a situation, except the wheel is fickle, and life can as easily take a turn for the worse as for the better.
Overall: 3W – Take your eyes forward to afar. There is much else in the world. The card also has a sense of entrepreneurship, which could mean that she should concentrate on career/business for now.
Ruling/Influence agent: Emperor - a man with a VERY strong personal and a control freak. The Emperor can be a sweet and comforting figure with his status and maturity, but on the other hand, can easily become a stubborn dictator who is not open to any reasoning except for his own.
2W->3W: if a stable situation comes tumbling down and produces more hurt than benefit, then perhaps it’s time to move out and forward.
QnC (R)->QnS (R): The straight laced and sometimes extreme QnS is no match for the conniving QnC. QnC can do substantial mental and emotional damage to QnS, causing her existing tendencies of self-inflicted pain to magnify. This does NOT bode well for the querent.
Reading Summary (for details see individual cards):
The querent seems to be in a relationship where she is controlled by her overpowering partner and is also facing an unfriendly female power that is doing much damage to her emotionally. She has always been unable to gain a fair share of control in a relationship and generally ends up to be the one who is hurt. Unfortunately, if the QnS (R) holds true, then this trend will continue. However, at this point, she can still break out of the relationship (4P(R)) and look elsewhere for her future. There are alternate futures for her, which she is very fortunate to have, but if she cannot break out of her mold and fall back into the same routine, she will continue to be the one who is hurt.
There are several feminine powers at war/work here, the two Queens, the High Priestess, and Strength. The two queens are both perversed, and Strength is unfortunately suppressed. Only the HP is still upright. The querent should seek help from trustworthy feminine powers around her and not continue to hurt herself and try to handle the situation on her own.A’s notes: Apart of whether or not this spread fits the situation completely, I was amazed that I was able to get such clearly defined cards. Everything made sense and the cards in their positions flowed so smoothly into each other. I think the querent must had been considering this question for a long time for the cards to form such a clear statement. As for the future of this spread… who knows. In my philosophy, tarot serves to guide, not dictate. I only wish the querent all the best, as I was also once the QnS. -

Suggestion: SunA friend of mine recently was “promoted” to a new position at work but is afraid that she is not up to the task. She is freaking out (has been for about 3 wks) wanted to know if she would succeed. Generally I would say that relying on cards for something that can be achieved through one’s own hard work and persistence is silly (and told her that clearly), but since she had been asking for a while, I just did a reading for her.Past: Strength R – lack of internal strength
Present: Death R + PgS R – fear of change and lack of motivation and drive
Future: Lack of new ideas and solutionsIt was pretty bleak. I know that her own mentality had affected the outcome of the cards and there’s no way to convince her that her future is not in the cards, they are only reflecting that with her current mental state everything will be sure to collapse. All of the cards in the actual spread are reversed, which is unusual but not impossible. Her personality is reflected in all of these cards (as she explained to me). The suggestion card I pulled for her to see what she needs to get out of this situation. She has the possibility of the Sun, but this strength must come from within her. She must see the light and hope in the situation (promotion, new knowledge, appreciation, RAISE) rather than the downside of it (stress, lack of knowledge and ability, fear of failure). Whether or not she can succeed… well, I did what I can (i.e. gave her a good yelling). -

Follow up to Ms. F
A while ago I posted a reading for my friend Ms. F. I warned her that even if there was romance in her life, it won't come to fruitation. She got the Lover (R), which means whatever was going to happen, it would be intense, but from the inability to communicate or connect on the most basic levels, no matter how much intensity, it would eventually come to cause her pain and frustration.There has always been an argument among tarot readers with regard to what tarot does - does it tell the future as is or does it tell you a possible future so that you can have the chance to change it?I believe that it's both. One of the teachers that I have been learning from said that: if there is no set future then you wouldn't be able to read it. That's logical, no? But the future changes according to changes that happen to us, because we create the future. So therefore, there is a possibility to change it.Geez, it's like the chicken or the egg.Point being, Ms. F went ahead and commenced what ended up to be a very intense but short-lived relationship. There were fundamental differences between the two of them that could not be resolved and in the end, parting was the best way to salvage whatever friendship they had.Not saying that my readings are very accurate. Occasionally things like this happen and I raise my eyebrows too. But that's the interesting thing about tarot. Perhaps you would ask whether or not my reading actually led to what happened. Well I can tell you that with her personality (as with many other girls), she would had gone ahead anyway, but with their differences, it really would not had been possible to maintain a balanced relationship. So... it's both. The relationship itself was written, but it was her personality that created what would be her future. Love is a strange thing. It can be a blessing, or a curse... but I guess in the end, it's what you learn from its trials that counts...As for the other part of her readings (i.e. SF vs. NY), she has not yet made a decision but it was previously indicated that something will happen in June that will give her greater clarity. I'm hoping for the best for her. -

[Reading] My Love Life ^^ (recap)
I can't believe I have a tag for Love. But it's definitely an interesting topic... that's why people can't help going back to it in conversations, books, movies, everything. Duh.
Before I left NY, out of boredom I did a reading for myself with both my Osho Zen and Waite decks. The funny/interesting thing is, they both gave me similar answers.Waite: April - Three of Cups (R)/Six of Swords (R); May - Lovers (R)/Queen of Pentacles (R); June - Knight of Cups/Two of Cups
Osho Zen: April - Going with the flow/Patience; May - Fool/Friendliness; June - Change/RipenessFor divination I generally use the Waite deck since I'm more familiar with it and also it's more accurate when it comes to practicality. But the Osho Zen deck is good for personal development.April is a time of indulgence and acceptance; it is what it is. May is a time of possible relationships but on a general level the conditions are just not right for anything substantial. June is the time of change and actual realizations.Knight of Cups (new opportunity/charming suitor)/Two of Cups (attraction and forming a bond) and Change/Ripeness (the Osho cards are pretty straightforward) all indicate that there's a strong chance of romance solidifying. Of course, there's some traveling that I'm planning to do in June with Lan so it's possible that this is what the cards are referring to, because that also presents a new opportunity as well as bonding. Though I have learned recently that whichever question you ask, the cards will answer you specifically for that question. So... I think it's up in the air. I don't treat it as an experiment, since that would be disrespectful to my cards. However, I do think it amusing that in my annual reading I got the Fool for June. That's why I *knew* that my move was going to be in June and despite that I tried to move twice in May, it didn't happen until June.It's the most interesting thing to tap into the secrets that life holds for each of us. I believe that there is a strong energy around us, and that's why I'm agnostic and not atheist. I am reluctant to name that energy, because that would limit/confine it. But I believe in it, and I believe it shall lead me the right way... provided I have the courage to follow.I don't care much about having a flourishing love life (lol), but I think having new opportunities and forming bonds with other people is always an interesting and educational thing. I don't look forward to anything (been very zen, following the advice of my dear monk xD) and it seems my policy of staying clear of any/everything is working! Yes, Apple's slowly becoming my designated Tarot card reading place. Monkey MM has gone through some pretty turbulent times in her life and is hoping to find some solace in a new relationship. I wish the world for her because she's such a lovely person. Below is the reading for her question.

[Reading] Tea Spot duo - Water Rat
For background see previous post. Poor Water Rat only had time to do one reading (though he was rather happy to find out I had my cards) even though he had a ton of questions he didn't get to ask.
He is also currently at crossroads (well that's when Tarot works the best anyway). There are many potential paths and projects ahead of him and he is not sure if he should concentrate on all or just one of them. Since we didn't have time to go through all the projects (had to do with the fact that Tea Spot apparently closes at 10!!!), I was only able to do a simple spread for him.Question: Should he concentrate on one project or all of them? Unfortunately, he later indicated to me that he did not know which project in particular that he was considering while he shuffled the cards, so even though the conclusion was that he should concentrate on one - which one?If he takes on one project, he currently has the full capability to perform it to perfection. In fact, he may have the tendency to overdo it. Whether or not this is a wise choice remains to be seen. In the future, he may come to doubt himself, whether or not he had made the correct decision or perhaps he had taken the fool's path. But the Fool's energy is immense because it's based on faith. If you put your trust in that faith, then you shall be able to walk your path without fear.If he takes on all of his projects at the same time, he will be facing pressure and difficulties from sources that may still be currently unbeknownest to him. The KS was (R), but the KW charges on with full speed. These two are the most active cards in the minor arcana. However, KS acts with more harmful energy than KW. KW relies on solid foundationn as well as plan of action, whereas KS often tend to end up hurting himself and others in his endeavours. KS is prone to arrogance as well as extreme actions. KW is more steady and being that he is upright, his energy should be the one that you allow to dominate your plan. -

This past Monday I met up with two good friends and had dinner at Boqueria and then onward to Tea Spot around the NYU area to do some readings. It was actually an accident that I had my cards (and no I do not carry them with me everywhere), but they certainly came in useful.

Fell from deck while shuffling - Six of Wands, High PriestessShe is in a very unique and (some may consider) enviable situation. She has just finished her studies and basically is free to go where ever she chooses. She loves NYC but wants to explore other locations while she is young and has the drive to move elsewhere. So she asked this question, wondering if it would be a good idea for her to move to SF, where she feels like she'd good a fair share of culture but it would still be very different than New York. She is currently in a position of prosperity, with the ability to share her "wealth" (this could be mental or financial riches) with other people. Although at first it seems as if she turned away from the happiness and fulfillment of a good life, but she knew she is taking a journey for a high purpose, and with C8(R), she will find this direction and what she is seeking. C8 is an interesting card. The person within is dejected and disappointed, but he is not giving up his search. And when in (R), turning back on what everyone thinks is a fully fulfilled future turns out to be the better answer.So although her natural instinct is to stay in NYC, for the outlook, SF is a better option for her.She dropped two cards while shuffling (not very careful or good at shuffling), 6W and the High Priestess. 6W is victory and HP clearly indicates that she is an intuitive and wise woman who already knows what she wants to and has to do. 6W is a card of action - victory from actions performed. There may be an opportunity or opportunities for a job in April, but they are the stable and steady type, and if she takes them, she may end up feeling bored and trapped - too controlled by the sense of stability. For May, on one hand, the concern with money still continues and life calls for her to be more sensible and choose a steady lifestyle, but there's a stronger wish to break through it all, to break free from the grasp of the Devil. She does not want to be hold down to bondage anymore because it will only lead to unhappiness. June seems to be an interesting month. The struggle against the Devil has led to clarity and direction.An observant reader will find that the 10P and 8C(R) both appeared in her previous spread (just to make this clear, Water Rat actually did his reading between Ms. F's two readings so the cards were thoroughly shuffled) in the SF side. The 10P in the Present position is now reversed and leads to 8C(R). This means that whatever stable situation she had in the SF reading (whatever gave her a sense of security) changed and she shall make a decision to take a journey to achieve the happiness that is in the 8C(R). Whether or not this indicates that she should move to SF in June remains to be seen. -

[Reading] Saints Alps Random Readings
It was GuyA's birthday and we had a (sort of) surprise dinner for him at a lovely Japanese restaurant, we ventured over to Apple (fail), then Cha-An (fail), and finally settled at Saints Alps. For those of you who are familiar with the area, the place is often filled with teenage youngsters drinking bubble tea. But no matter! Tarot does not wait for anyone! Rather... it seems people's curiosities really tend to overcome circumstances. So over a nice cup of Lichee Green Tea w/ 2 slices of Lemon and a cup of herbal jelly, I did a few readings for the crowd.

She is hopeful yet unsure about the future of her health and thence asked this question. It has been a rough and unnecessarily long road for her to get to the current moment. She hopes to be able to finally become open and receptive of advice and help from others, but she still lacks trust in the authorities. There may be due cause for her lack of faith in the doctors and professionals because although there are many, will they truly help her? Unfortunately, the future is a toss-up, falling back on the mercy of luck and fortune. The wheels are slowly turning for her, but they are out of anyone's control. Suggestion: LoversWhile shuffling he almost accidentally flipped over the 9 of Pentacles. I saw it but left it to be shuffled with the other cards because he had not seen it. As expected, the card turned up in his present situation, which indicates that it is an issue he is very concerned with at the moment. He has always been someone who didn't spend much and although money had been somewhat of an important issue in his life, it is being transformed. He is no longer satisfied with money without emotional or intellectual development. He is unhappy and wants to be able to find something that stimulates him, that makes him want to build and create. He longs for something artistic, something more important than money. If this tug-of-war continues without resolution, he will end up depleated of his energy and drive, which makes life even the more boring and frustrating. In order to break out of the situation, he would need to build out his social network. Seek things/people that move him on an emotional level and form a connection. Many things in life are not just about the money or the practicality.He and I had a slight disagreement over the 9 of Pentacles. I saw it as money not being that important and him having enough of it so that he can (wants to) focus on more spiritual things, but he insists that he does not have enough of it. Indeed we may both be right. Although the person in P9 is more focused on the luscious garden, it is out of the comfort of having enough money already stored away. If that source is depleated, or is not built properly, then he would not have the leisure to enjoy life. Suggestion: King of Cups (R)She has been struggling in both her career and also her financial situation (I mean this is NYC, you can trip on a struggling artist every other step). She has high hopes for a pitch she and her friend is doing and things are looking up for her. The power of the 6W assures her that victory is on the way, and she will definitely be very happy and satisfied by it. However, on the money front, she has been waiting long and hard, but unfortunately, the waiting is not over. It's also likely that she is so focused on this issue that she is neglecting to set her foundations (i.e. she has no Pentacle cards, which denote proper monetary and actual foundation). Perhaps she must be aware that this drive for success has the danger of turning her into someone non too gentle.Q2) Will her family's financial situation improve? Suggestion: King of Swords (R)To add to her troubles, on the family front things have never been smooth. Unfortunately, again she has no Pentacles. It's a long and frustrating journey, one filled with anxiety and fear, and it is far from over. She and the others may wish to evade the responsibilities, but no one can run away. The lack of balance in her family situation and a male element's desire to use his intellect and power to manipulate the situation will only make things worse - and she must be wary.In general, doing readings in public places are discouraged. I am only recently beginning to do these readings although I do not prefer to do them out in the open. It is harder to concentrate and also speak about more private matters. The good thing about being in NYC is that even though everyone may be thinking: %@(*, they just cast a causal glance in our direction occasionally, but no one actually comes and asks what going on. :) -
