Movies I've Seen Since May - Wow
See others: ARGH&MEH, NICEEverything in this post is basically movies I would have given its own review had I not watched them such a long time ago that I can't justify raving about them without any concrete scenes/examples. But trust me, these are definitely movies you don't want to miss.WOW, I’m watching that again:Detroit Metal City - I would had given this movie its own review (like some others) had I not waited so long (I really did watch this in May) to talk about it. IT WAS HILARIOUS!!! I have no other word for it. It belongs to the other category of Japanese movies that is just quirky to the core and absurd and offensive yet educational/inspirational and uplifting... yes, all at the same time!!! The lead actor is Kenichi Matsuyama, whom some of you may know better as L (!!!) from Death Note the movie. He is PERFECT in this movie and it really shows how good of an actor he is. He did a phenomenal portrayal of the much conflicted main character despite that he looks awkwardly tall for his role (personal opinion). The side characters were distinct and lovable, if somewhat one dimensional. But this was based off of a manga, so really, I think it's a genre thing. In any case, if you're ready for some Death Metal (!), S&M Japanese style, nutzo fans, and... struggling nerds, or just want to have lots of fun, go watch this movie!Galileo: Suspect X (Yougisha X no Kenshin) - This was one of the few decent movies to come out of Japan lately (no offense, Departures fans). I saw commercials for it when I was traveling in Japan last year but didn't watch it b/c it was SO EXPENSIVE!!! But I did watch it when I got back to the US. I absolutely adore Fukuyama Masaharu but I have to say Shinichi Tsutsumi really was quite a match for him in this movie. Both characters (Yugawa & Ishigami) were very reserved men, so you really only get a taste of their inner emotions in the most subtle ways. It literally had me clinching my fist sitting on the edge of my seat. I'm a sucker for detective stories and a nerd when it comes to proving something by science so this was right up my alley. The answer made sense and even though the ending to the movie was not quite happy, it was the only route it could take. Human beings decide their own fates by making decisions with the personalities that they have developed through an entire lifetime of experiences. In the end, we must look to ourselves for the person responsible for our lives. There are other lessons in this movie: 1) What YOU, regardless of if you're a genius, decide is the best solution for SOMEONE ELSE may not actually be true because you are dealing with another human being; 2) When we judge life or people with our own brands of justice, we are inherently denying the existence of other types/manifestations of justice; and 3) The likely end is likely not to be the most perfect end. Such is life.Star Trek 2009 - What much more can I say? I went to watch this movie twice (would've seen it a third time if people could stand my ranting and raving) and named my computer after Spock... c'mon. That in itself should really be a testament to how much I really liked this movie. It was a lot of fun and had a very well developed storyline. I like it when things make sense, and this definitely made a lot of sense and the ride to finding the answer was awesome!I do think though... that the next electronic toy that comes into my hand... I'll probably name it Rorschach.I really wanted to see UP, but when the chance is gone, it’s gone. UP is not even in theaters anymore. -

L. G. Spock (& my secret (?) obsessions)
After much deliberation with some friends, I decided to rename my netbook to L.G. Spock. No relation to LG (the Korean brand). It actually stands for L (Death Note), Galileo (Masaharu Fukuyama version), and of course, Mr. Spock (mostly the Zachery Quinto version, but I like the character in general). Despite the fact that I may be viewed as a super dork after my current decision, I am comfortable with my dorkiness and am willing to receive any contrary opinions. I'll just ignore them. xDLately it's just been an intense display of dorkiness on my end as well as a discovery of dorkiness in my friends. We were hailing each other with "live long and prosper" signs over dinner at a Chinese restaurant. I figured, might as well go all the way!All three of these characters that my netbook is named after have characteristics in common:
1) Actions based on reason and logical calculations
2) Poker-faced emotionless demeanor
3) Incredibly nerdy/dorkyThere is a very specific reason I became so obsessed with Spock... and it has less to do with how good he was in the movie than with one of my long time secret obsessions. Although knowing me, I'll probably end up shortening his (yes my netbook is a "he", ahem) name to "L" or "Spocky" or "GG" or the like... >_<
*Namesake, as defined in the OED, can be used both for the name giver and the name receiver (yes, I like the OED).
